Big Week Ahead!

This Week:
- Scholastic orders are due to be submitted by Wednesday, Feb 27th
- Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day, students can wear pink to raise awareness and stop bullying
- Wednesday is also the day Storyteller Marie Bryce will visit
- Students are learning more about magnetism and will be doing experiments
- We are also working on final copies of our Arctic Animal Research reports
- Friday, March 1st is a PD Day, no classes for students

Soapstone and Valentines

With the help of Teacher's Pet, we had a fantastic experience creating beautiful soapstone carvings on Monday. Students were amazed how their creations resembled both the animals and the Inuit art they have studied. Ask your child the steps they took to create their carving. 

It's been a quick half-day today with students enjoying 100th day activities and a Valentine's Day celebration! Thank you very much to those of you who sent in food and treats for our party, and also who sent Valentine's items for students' mailboxes- what marvelous and creative gifts. The kids were thrilled to both give and receive today and the spirit of community and belonging was in full strength. 

Remember this is a 5-day weekend for students, with Teachers' Convention on Thursday and Friday, and Family Day on Monday. I hope you have a wonderful weekend with plenty of family time.

Math Night Tonight! 6-7pm

Hi families,

Tonight is Math Night, 6-7pm. Come along and learn some interactive math games to help support your child's numeracy skills!

Next Wednesday, February 13th, our class will be having a Valentine celebration. If you would like to provide a snack please let our room parent know.

If your child wishes to create Valentine cards, a list of names will be sent home today. If you are sending Valentines, please ensure that you bring one for every student in our classroom.  

This week we have wrapped up our Hot and Cold centers, and begun a new round of multi-class Literacy Groups. Students participated in a Beakerhead design challenge where they worked in groups to create a model of their ideal playground for our school. The playground meeting for parents is coming up on Feb 21st where you can vote on the vendor, and whether we should have the pour in place rubber or gravel surface. 

Yesterday we celebrated Chinese New Year. We were fortunate to have a Martial Arts and Lion Dance presentation in the afternoon by students from The Calgary Tai Chi & Martial Arts College. Some of us even caught the lettuce from the lion!

Arctic Art, Stations and Math Night

Check out the beautiful Inuksuk artwork! Students enjoyed learning about the Messengers of the North, learned how to design and draw their own Inuksuk, and decided whether to represent a sunrise or sunset scene with warm or cool colours.

We've been rotating through some very interactive and interesting Science stations in order to explore hot and cold temperatures. Ask your child about their favourite station. 

Our room parent sent out a volunteer request last week for our remaining field trips. We'd love to have you join us and we are really looking forward to these events!

Report cards came home in your child's backpack on Thursday. Please sign and return the white envelopes as we will reuse them for the June report card.

This week looks to be a frigid one. If the temperature is below -20C (with windchill) it is designated as a Blue Day and students will come straight into the school in the morning, and will not be outside for recess or lunch. Of course, it is still important to bundle up for arrival and dismissal.

Finally, Thursday night from 6-7pm is Copperfield's Annual Math Night. Join us for an evening of interactive math activities with your child, and walk away with ideas for how to support your child's numeracy skills at home. See you then!
