Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! Our class enjoyed finishing up their Frankenbuddies this week in order to have them displayed for our party. Thank you to all the families who sent in wonderful treats and volunteered today! We had a great day sharing our Spooky Stories, working on some Halloween-themed spelling words,  and decoding a secret message.

Yesterday we were science detectives and made discoveries to solve 12 mystery liquids. Ask your child what liquid surprised them the most. Tomorrow and Friday we will be doing a circuit through a number of experiments with liquids. Be sure to ask you child about the different experiments tomorrow when they get home.

In math we continue to represent numbers to 50 in a variety of ways with manipulatives, words, and pictures.

In Social Studies we have been learning about some mapping characteristics.  The students learned about a compass rose, key/legend, and a scale.  Ask your child to tell you what a map is, what a compass rose is, and what a key or legend is used for.  Students were able to create their own way of remembering N, E, S, W.  Ask your child to tell you what saying they came up with to help them remember.

Building Club and Book Truck Visit

Dear Families,
Beginning on Tuesday, November 6th, grade 2 students will be invited to participate in a lunchtime building club. Instead of going outside to play, they will stay inside to enjoy building friendships while working with Lego, wooden blocks, or K'nex. Students will eat together in room 171-172 and then participate in the club.

The dates for building club are:

November 13th
November 20th
November 27th

We are only able to accept 40 children due to safety and supplies. Please hand in your form as soon as possible if you are interested in joining building club. The first 40 students will be accepted.

Calgary Public Library Book Truck Information 

The next book truck visit at Copperfield School will be on Wednesday November 14 from 8:30am-11:15am. 

Students who signed out a book on the last visit:

If you have already returned your book to the nearest Public Library, fantastic! 

You can also return your books to the blue bin labeled “Book Truck” in the Learning Commons. These books will then be checked in on November 14 “fine free”. (The loan period is 3 weeks but there will be no charges by the Calgary Public Library if they are returned for November 14)

Hi Families,

Thank you for the quick response for volunteers and supplies for our Halloween Party next week- it's sure to be a great time. As we get closer to Halloween, we have been writing some spooky stories, paying particular attention to the main characters, the setting, the time of day, and the problem of our stories. We are also studying "Room on the Broom" by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Ask your child what the problem was in the story, and what was the solution.

In math we continue to work on representing and manipulating numbers to 100. Students have learned a variety of strategies and games. 

In Social we are wrapping up our broad study of Canada and starting to narrow our focus to specific types of communities. The first area we will study is the Prairies.

For Science, we reflected on our experiences studying Liquids and created some visual journal pages detailing the scientific method of some of our experiments, as well as a summary of the three states of matter as it pertains to liquids.

I'm starting to receive a few book orders! The due date for these will be Monday, October 29th. Riddles in Art

As our school development plan for this year has a strong focus on math,

Copperfield community and school have been given the opportunity to work with an amazing artist and teacher named Sharon Fortowsky. We would like to engage our Copperfield families with a math task that you can work on together. You may have seen some of the electrical boxes in Copperfield with some beautiful paintings on them.  One of them is by the Shell station and the other is on 52nd.  Sharon has painted these boxes with a purpose and is encouraging parents and students to take a look at the boxes as there are math riddles that go along with the paintings. A short article with the riddle has been posted in the Copperfield-Mahogany community association newsletter Copperfield Mahogany Community newsletter

The first clues so far have also been posted on the community Copperfield Mahogany Facebook page.  Because it might be difficult for families to get over to the physical boxes, there is a link to the riddles and pictures of the boxes for your family to take a look at.  We encourage you to discuss with your child any math that your child sees on these two boxes.  Please copy the link below to take a look at the three riddles that have been given so far.

Our class has had a fantastic day being true Scientists. Our in-school field trip with Scientists in School was interactive and exciting, and left students wanting to learn more. We worked with mixtures, measured the temperature of ice under different conditions, tested the solubility of various substances, and made GIGANTIC bubbles! We were also sent home with an experiment to try with our families. 

 We enjoyed making predictions about buoyancy, scientific observations, and connections to our everyday lives. 

On our visit to the "red park" we discovered a nest of ladybugs, and wondered if they were confused by the warm weather. We'll learn more about small crawling and flying animals in the spring. 

We have been looking at maps of Canada and learning about the different provinces and territories. The Canada Crew theme song has been helping us to remember. Ask you child to sing along and tell you how many provinces and territories!

Sunny Autumn Days

What a glorious start to the week! We took a walk to the park near Wildflower Pond and saw a rabbit, many ducks and even a wasp or two. As the week goes on, the temperatures will rise even more and we plan to spend a lot of time outside. Walk-tober continues! Enjoy and walk, wheel, ride or scoot to school.

Our mixed literacy groups have been going really well. Students are enjoying the opportunity to work with different peers and teachers. My literacy groups wrote an acrostic poem about Autumn. Only a few more days until our in-school field trip with Scientists in Schools! In Math, we are working on representing numbers using place value. Ask your child how many tens and how many ones are in 55.

The Book Truck

The Calgary Public Library Book Truck is coming to Copperfield School! The information was shared in the weekly update yesterday. It would be great if everyone could experience this. Please fill out the forms and return to Mrs Depner ASAP. The first visit will be next Wednesday October 17.

This week we began our new literacy groups.  Students have been grouped based on their reading strategies and abilities and will be meeting with one of the grade 2 teachers each morning.  This gives them the opportunity to learn from other teachers and interact with students from all of the other classes.  They seem to be enjoying this time and we hope to see a lot of growth over the next few months. Ask them who they are working with and what they have been doing in their groups.

We learned some new math games  using our power of 10 cards.  By using these cards the students build a strong foundation of numbers that work together to make 10 which will be beneficial as they progress through the grades. They are also loving 'Prodigy' which is a math program that they have used twice now.  It is a fun, motivating way to reinforce the math concepts they know and are learning.  A sheet to log in was sent home so you can put your child on 'Prodigy' if you would like.

In science we continue to work on liquids and yesterday, and today, they were doing an experiment and recording their learning and observations.  Ask your child to tell you what they learned from the experiments.

Home Reading

Our Home Reading program has begun! Ask your child about their home reading treasure track. You will find a leveled reading book and a little white ticket in your child's home reading bag. Your child will read the book to you. Once they have finished reading, you will sign the ticket. It is your child's responsibility to remember to bring the Home Reading book back to school with the signed ticket. If your child doesn't have a ticket one day, any piece of paper from home can be used, as long as their name and your signature are on the paper. Your child will bring home a new book everyday of the week. Please sign the ticket as this shows me that the reading has been done. Your child is aiming to read 4-5 times per week, for 5 minutes or more. Happy Reading!

Walktober

A Message from our Principal, Mrs Swain: Tomorrow is International Walk to School Day. If you are able, please bundle up and  walk to school for the month of October. Tomorrow there will be special guests to greet you.

- Thank you to families who have sent in headphones. If you haven't already done so, please send in a pair of headphones for your child to use with the laptops and iPads

Orange Shirt Day

Today we had an assembly to mark Orange Shirt Day and honour survivors of Canada's Residential Schools. At the assembly, students were thrilled to experience some elements of First Nations culture and be a part of a performance by Chantal Songstorm-Chagnon, and to watch one of our very own Copperfield students who is a Fancy Dancer.

We created a Visual Journal page about how Every Child Matters. We really enjoyed reading the book Stolen Words by Melanie Florence.

In Social Studies we have been preparing to dig into communities across Canada, and got busy creating a torn paper project to represent rural communities.
