Winter Concert 2018

Kindergarten

Wednesday, December 19^th at 10:30am and 2:30pm

Kindergarten students will be having mini concerts during the day on Wednesday, Dec.19^th. The morning classes will perform in the gym at 10:30am and afternoon classes at 2:30pm. Families are welcome to attend!

Grade 1- 4 Students

Similar to last year we are double casting the winter concert so that there's room for everyone in our gym. Below is the list of when each class performs. We ask that families only come one night. If you have several children at our school and their performances DO NOT fall on the same evening please chose which night you would like to come and both (or all) your children can perform on that night with others of their same grade group. Once you decide please let myself and all teachers involved know.

Grandparents or other family members who would like to see the concert and are available during the day are welcome to come to the dress rehearsal. This would help us out as we anticipate a full gym for evening performances.

GROUP A: Wednesday, Dec. 12, dress rehearsal 2:00pm, concert 6:30pm
1 – Fernandez, Samphire, R.A.
2 – Thumm, Brice, Moravec
3 – Allan, Reilly
4 -  Marino, Ross

GROUP B: Thursday, Dec. 13, dress rehearsal 10:00am, concert 6:30pm
1 – Granger, Bredahl, Ly
2 – Thouin, Depner
3 – Nezami, Dorish, Molsberry
4 – Duha/Handelsman, Dunlop

Grade 4 students who are in the Main Cast are asked to come both nights (please drop off and pick up your child on the night you are not attending).

The Show:

The show is a very ‘Seussian’ version of The Grinch! We also have a side story about a Copperfield family who have a tradition to read The Grinch every Christmas eve.

What Students Should Wear

All students (excluding actors) are asked to dress up as Who’s!  You do not need to buy anything new. Here are some ideas: bright colours, stripes, polka dots, big hair bows or bow ties, anything you might wear for a special occasion

One Day Arts School!

We had such a blast today at Arts Commons for One Day Arts School! The city skyline was shining brightly in the sun as we checked out Calgary landmarks on the way downtown. We spent the morning with songwriter and musician Heather Blush, writing our very own original song about the Prairies, and what happens when there is a whiteout blizzard. 

We ate lunch at the Jack Singer, then went outside for some fresh air and explored Olympic Plaza, where we saw people ice skating on their lunch break. We also saw a celebration of 106 years of Albanian Independence at City Hall.

After lunch, we worked with visual artist Verna Vogel who taught us the art of Collage, using tissue paper, decorative paper, construction paper and Mod Podge. Students created gorgeous artwork depicting prairie scenery. 

Before we knew it, our exciting day was over and as we boarded the bus to go back to school, we got to see some of Calgary's safety services in action as there was an Alberta Emergency Alert Test and training event. We saw fire trucks racing by, police on bicycles, police tactical unit vehicles and an ambulance or two. What a day!

Friday is Copperfield Red Shirt Day! Remember to wear your red shirt.

Starting December 3rd, 2018 Copperfield School will once again be participating in the Holiday campaign called "Warm Feet for the Street" in support of the Mustard Seed. The Mustard Seed offers services that help people make positive and lasting change in their lives. During the holidays they collect socks stuffed with hygiene aids and other useful items to distribute. We will be collecting items in our classrooms until December 17th, then on the 17th each class will stuff socks with all the items collected. Please start talking with your family about ways you can contribute and support Copperfield School as we support the Calgary Mustard Seed. 

Conferences and Field Trip

Hi Families!

It was great to meet with all of you. Your children have been working hard and are delighted to share their work. 

Our Prairie landscape artwork turned out so beautifully. This was our first mixed-media multi-step art project and students applied what they have learned about the Prairies to make their pieces realistic. The accompanying poems really bring the experience to life.

Just a reminder that our field trip to Arts Commons for One Day Arts School is coming up on Wednesday, November 28th. Students will need to dress for the weather and bring a litterless lunch. There is no need for students to bring any spending money, nor will they have any opportunity to buy anything.

We are still looking for volunteers. Please contact me or the room parent as soon as possible if you are available. If the minimum adult/student ratio is not met, we will have to cancel.

Parent Conferences, Jersey Day and Skipping Club

Parent Conferences are on Thursday and Friday this week. Please book an appointment so that we can discuss all of the hard work your child has been doing. There will be an Usborne book fair at the conferences so feel free to drop by and take a look at the amazing selection of books that will be available.

Wednesday is Fun Lunch, and Thursday is Jersey Day! In honour of the Stampeders winning the Western final, students can wear their favourite team's jersey. 

There will be a Skipping Club at lunch for grade ones and twos on Wednesdays. Talk to your child about whether they want to be part of this club. If they would like to, please click on the link below and return the form.

Earth Rangers and Reminders

We had a fantastic time at the Earth Rangers assembly! Be sure to ask your child which live animal was their favourite, and what they learned about the effects of climate change on wildlife in Canada and around the world. Students brought home a postcard with information on how to sign up to be an Earth Ranger. This free Government of Canada program invites students to take part in wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship activities.

Parent Conferences are coming up next Thursday and Friday. Conference Manager will open for online bookings tomorrow morning at 8am. I look forward to meeting with you and sharing your child's progress. 

Our field trip to Arts Commons for One Day Art School is coming up quickly; be sure to return your forms and payment by the 26th. 

Upcoming Events

Hello families,

This Friday we will be having our Remembrance Day Assembly.  This year it will be hosted by the Grade 4 students and will begin at 10:30am. Families are welcome to attend the assembly.

If your son or daughter is in a service club, such as Sparks, Brownies, Daisies, Girl Guides, Beavers, or Cubs, we invite them to wear their uniforms on Friday.  They will be invited to be part of the assembly by helping to bring the wreaths up to the front of the gym.

We are also collecting donations for the Veterans' Food Bank.  If you have non-perishable items you wish to donate, we will be collecting them throughout the week.  Please send them in with your child or you can bring them in when coming for the assembly on Friday.
